Revealed: Why Ekong Signed For Watford

The Super Eagles star joined the Hornets on a five-year deal from Italian Serie A club Udinese, and he has revealed the reason for his decision

William Troost Ekong has said the reason behind his decision to join Watford is because he wants to play in the Premier League, and he believes in the club’s project.

Watford were relegated from the Premier League last season, but Vladimir Ivić’s side are looking for an immediate return to the top-flight, and they currently sit in fifth place with seven points from three games.

Nonetheless, Ekong’s move from a top league like the Italian Serie A to the Skybet Championship was a surprising one, but the 27-year-old insists it is the right move for him.

“I believe in the project for Watford to get back into the Premier League,” Ekong told BBC Sport Africa.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League, and Watford has given me the platform now to get there. Looking at the squad, I believe we have the quality to do it.”

There’ve been reports that the relationship between Udinese and Watford, who are both owned by the Pozzo family might have left Ekong with no choice.  However, the former Bursaspor defender hinted it was his decision, saying it is the right step for him.

“I’ve always made tactical decisions for my career, and this felt like the right step now for me and my family,” Ekong added.
