German Youth International Confirms Switch To Nigeria

He was born in Germany and has represented the country at youth level, but Kevin Akpoguma has decided to switch international allegiance to the Super Eagles.

The Hoffenheim star confirmed his intention to play for Nigeria at the international level days after Gernot Rohr shared the news.

In a recent report, Rohr revealed he has been able to convince the 25-year old to choose Nigeria ahead of Germany, and the former Karlsruhe SC star has now confirmed the news.

Although he was born in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany, Akpoguma qualifies to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian father.

Speaking in an interview on Hoffenheim’s website, Akpoguma revealed he took the decision because he’s at the age where he has enough club experience to play at the international level.

“I am now at an age where I have already gained experience at European level with TSG and feel ready to play for my homeland,” the 25-year-old said.

Akpoguma has represented Die Mancshaft youth teams from the U16 level to the U21, making 62 appearances in total. However, he revealed he’s happy to represent Nigeria, and also looking forward to meeting his new teammates.

“It makes me incredibly proud, and I am positively excited. I’m really looking forward to getting to know the team,” he added.

The 25-year-old is not part of the Super Eagles squad that will face Algeria and Tunisia in two friendly games next month.

However, he could make his debut when Nigeria play Sierra Leone in November’s doubleheader Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
