Super Eagles Striker’s Reaction After An Excellent Weekend

While the likes of Paul Onuachu, Moses Simon, Cyriel Dessers, Henry Onyekuru, and Emmanuel Dennis failed to found the back of the net for their different clubs, one Nigerian striker made the difference in France

Bordeaux striker Josh Maja has expressed his delight at grabbing his first goal of the season as Les Girondins claimed their first win of the campaign with a 2-0 defeat of Angers at the Stade Raymond-Kopa on Sunday.

The young Nigerian forward opened the scoring for the visitors after just 25 minutes before Basic made sure of the points two minutes later.

Maja’s compatriot, Samuel Kalu, played the last 22 minutes of the encounter.

Reacting to the club’s first victory of the season after only managing a draw at home to Nantes last weekend, Maja said to the press:

“I feel good. Of course, it’s important to open the scoring and score your first goal of the season.

“But the most important thing is that we had a good game with good intensity, energy, and confidence.

“We are winning our first three points of the season, so it bodes well for the future. We will try to achieve other good results to be consistent and continue like this.”

Maja has been handed a starting role in both of Bordeaux’s two games so far this term by the new manager, Jean-Louis Gasset, an indication of the 66-year-old tactician’s confidence in the Nigeria international.

The former Sunderland star only made six starts in the 21 Ligue 1 games he featured in last season under former boss Paulo Sousa, despite scoring six goals.

Bordeaux will, next week, play host to Champions League semi-finalists Olympique Lyonnais.
