Odegbami Strikes Again, Speaks On Nigeria’s Prospect At The 2022 AFCON And World Cup

The former Shooting Stars player has always expressed his happiness with the people in charge of the Super Eagles and has called for their sack if they fail to qualify for the 2022 World Cup

Segun Odegbami has revealed it should not be a surprise if Nigeria wins the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, saying the country should be winning it every time.

Nigeria’s last win at the continental showpiece was in 2013, although they finished third at the 2019 edition in Egypt.

The next edition which was supposed to hold next year has been postponed till 2022 due to the coronavirus, and Nigeria will compete with one of the favourites.

The Super Eagles are on course to qualify for the tournament in Cameroon having won their first two games in the qualifying series.

Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr has been tasked to lead the country to her fourth continental title, and Odegbami insists it should not come as a surprise if the team pulls it off.

When asked in an interview with Complete Sports if it would be a surprise if Nigeria win the competition in 20202, Odegbami said; “It won’t be a surprise at all. The Eagles always stand a very good chance once it is in Africa.

“In fact, we should be winning the Nations Cup every time because if we do what we need to do well and we fail to win it, then something must have gone wrong.

“Some times, when our team doesn’t seem okay, we still get to the final or semi-final. So, to win it in 2022 will not be a surprise at all.

The 1980 AFCON winner also revealed qualifying for the 2022 World Cup is non-negotiable, and anything other than a ticket to Qatar should result in the sacking of the Super Eagles handlers.

“If we don’t qualify for the (Qatar 2022) World Cup, everybody around the Super Eagles should be sacked.”

“Nigeria must always qualify for the World Cup. Five countries, from the continent of Africa, and we don’t get to pick one of the five qualification slots for the World Cup, no, no, no, we must have to qualify.

Odegbami went on to say the Super Eagles should not be aiming to qualify alone, but also to win the tournament.

“It is not even about qualification for the World Cup, we should even be aiming to win the World Cup. We should be for Africa, what Brazil is for South America, always qualifying and present at the World Cup.
