Rohr Reveals Why NPFL Players Have No Chance In The Super Eagles

The Franco-German tactician signed a new two-year deal with the Nigeria Football Federation, and one of the conditions included in his contract is more local league players representation in his team

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has once again reiterated that players from the Nigeria Professional Football League will always find it difficult to make his squad because they are not good enough.

Rohr extended his contract a few weeks ago, and in the conditions his new agreement, the German was tasked with the responsibility of nurturing players from the local league.

The former Bordeaux manager has received criticism from some section of the media over his decision to sideline NPFL players from his team.

While it was hoped that the new condition in his extended contract would give local league players more opportunities, Rohr has hinted that it won’t be the case, saying NPFL players are not good enough.

Speaking in an interview with Mannheimer Morgen, the 66-year-old revealed it’s difficult to play NPFL players because their foreign-based counterparts are better.

Rohr added that even if there are good players in the local league, they don’t stay long enough before moving to Europe.

When asked why he does not pick enough players from the local league, Rohr said: “Because they are not good enough and because I have better ones. There are so many good players in Europe.”

“I have invited more than 20 local players since 2016. If they are good, sooner or later they’ll all end up in Europe,” he added.
