Liverpool are Premier League Champions for the first time in their history following Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.
While it was inevitable that Jurgen Klopp’s men will be champions, Chelsea’s win over last season’s champions mathematically sealed the title for the Merseyside club.
City went into the match knowing anything other than a win will see them lose the defence of their title, and also give a guard of honour to Jurgen Klopp’s side next week.
The Citizens started on the front foot, but for all their dominance, it was Chelsea who got the breakthrough nine minutes before half-time through Christian Pulisic.
The USA international, a former player under Klopp at Dortmund, picked the ball from his half before running past Mendy to slot past Ederson in City’s goal.
His goal must have sent the Red half of Merseyside and Liverpool fans worldwide into delirium. Chelsea went into the break with the advantage.
However, City came out charging following the restart, and they got levelled after ten minutes courtesy a brilliant freekick from Kevin De Bruyne.
From that moment, it was end to end stuff, but once again it was Chelsea that would take the initiative- this time from the penalty spot.
Fernandinho was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box and was duly sent off. Willian stepped up to take the resulting penalty, firing past Ederson.
Manchester City tried to find a way back into the game, but Chelsea would not be denied the three points, which ultimately handed Liverpool their 19th league title, but their first since Premier League inception.
