Super Eagles and Fulham defender, Calvin Chinedu Bassey, was included in Troy Deeney’s BBC Matchday 18 Team of the Week after a brilliant performance in his side’s midweek 2-1 win over Chelsea, Soccernet.ng reports.
Bassey produced a strong block at the end of the first half to deny Cole Palmer a second goal at Stamford Bridge, and nearly got on the scoring side of things as well but was denied by Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez. Late goals from Harry Wilson and Rodrigo Muniz sealed three points for Marco Silva’s side.
Deeney, who was famously known as a Watford striker before he hung his boots, took up punditry with BBC and is now tasked with picking the BBC Team of the Week.
In goal, the former Watford striker opted for Nottingham Forests’ Matz Sels who made crucial saves in The Reds’ 1-0 win over Ange Postecoglu’s Tottenham Hotspur. Nuno Espirito’s side have now won four games running and are 4th on the league table.
Deeney’s centre-back pairing includes Nottingham Forest’s Murillo Dos Santos and Fulham’s Calvin Bassey who were locked in as their respective sides sealed wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. Pervis Estupinán claims the left-back spot.
“Solid again. Murillo kept a clean sheet and Bassey would have had one if not for a wonderful goal from Cole Palmer. Both were wonderful and instrumental to their teams getting victories,” Deeney wrote in his column.
Deeney opted for a midfield five. Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Newcastle United’s Joelinton pair up in a pivot as the duo found the back of their net in their side’s win over Leicester City and Aston Villa respectively.
On the left flank, Cody Gakpo claims a spot after scoring a brilliant curler against Leicester City. Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon takes on the right flank after scoring against Aston Villa. Wolves’ Matheus Santos Camiero Da Cunha is in the number ten position as he scored directly from a corner kick against Manchester United.
