The former Olympique Marseille star was announced as the Super Eagles assistant manager in February and the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has revealed the reason behind the decision
Joseph Yobo was appointed as Rohr’s assistant because the NFF are preparing for the future, and Yobo is the perfect fit.
The former Everton star replaced Imama Amapakabo as the Super Eagles assistant coach, but his appointment was met with criticism as he does not have a coaching qualification.
However, Pinnick has come out to defend the appointment, saying Yobo’s record as a player makes him the perfect choice for the job. Yobo made his Super Eagles debut in 2001 and went on to win 102 caps (a joint record) before retiring in 2014.
He represented Nigeria at six Africa Cup of Nations including the 2013 edition, where he led the country to her third continental title. He also played at three world cups and was captain at both country and club level.
With him having such an illustrious career, Pinnick revealed it was a no brainer to appoint him as an assistant to Rohr.
” What more do you need? He was captain of the Super Eagles, he was captain of Everton, he played football at the highest level, went to two or three world cups, went to Nation’s cup, won the Nation’s Cup,” Pinnick said in an interview with Lagos 91.3FM with quotes gotten via reelradio
” Yobo is super qualified we don’t have any regret about it and the future will tell because I know exactly what I am saying.” He said.
” We want to nurture our own for the future and like I told you his leadership quality as never been in doubt and that his the first element, not even his education,” Pinnick added.
