NPFL Clubs, LMC Agree On Modalities To Conclude Suspended League Season

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubs and the leadership of the League Management Company (LMC) have agreed to comply with any decision made by the NFF and other stakeholders regarding how to conclude the suspended 2019/20 season.

The Nigerian football league season was suspended in March following the outbreak of the COVID-19 disease, which also has paralysed football activities across most parts of the world.

Until the league’s suspension, Plateau United sat atop the NPFL table, after picking up 49 points from 25 games.

Rivers United are four points behind in second place, with 13 more matches to be played. Lobi Stars and Enugu Rangers make up the top four, boasting 43 and 37 points respectively.

However, Enyimba, seated in sixth place with 36 points could overtake the Jos giants at the summit should they claim victories in all the five games they have at hand over the leaders.

But after meeting with all 20 league clubs, Chairman of the LMC Shehu Dikko told the NFF website:

“It was unanimously agreed that we would continue to liaise with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Sports Ministry on the possibilities that would work for us and taking into consideration decisions that may be reached by CAF and FIFA with regards to international tournaments, calendar and regulations etc.

“So, any option and or format that may be chosen will also consider the available time frame within this framework.”

The clubs also revealed that their players and officials would not be denied their salaries and wages during this trying period but that there are even plans in place to keep supporting them during this difficult time.
