He is one of the best goalkeepers to come out of Africa, but Enyeama says two goalkeeping greats inspire him to do more
Vincent Enyeama has revealed that former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar, and ex-Real Madrid star, Iker Casillas are the two players he looks up to in the game.
The Super Eagles star is arguably the best goalkeeping export from Africa in modern times. The 37-year-old won 101 caps for Nigeria with his glorious moment coming in 2013 when he led the team to their Africa Cup of Nations title.
At club level, Enyeama won two CAF Champions League titles with Enyimba and the Israeli Premier League with Hapoel Tel-Aviv and Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
He also had a successful stint with Ligue 1 side, Lille. Although he never won a title at the club, Enyeama was Les Dogues undisputed No 1 for four seasons and was just 114 minutes away from equaling Gaëtan Huard’s clean sheet record in the Ligue 1.
However despite his achievements, Enyeama says he still has role models in football, and he looks up to Van Der Sar and Casillas.
Van Der Sar was one of the best goalkeepers in the world during his playing career which saw him feature for the likes of Ajax and Manchester United.
The same can also be said about Casillas who was the world’s top No. 1 for some period of his career at Real Madrid and later at FC Porto.
Speaking in an Instagram live interview with Super Eagles account, Enyeama said: “I looked up to Van De Sar, Casillas, they inspired me to practice different aspects of my game.”
Enyeama is currently without a club, but he recently revealed he turned down an offer from Dijon.
