Osimhen Speaks On Ighalo’s Potential Return To The Super Eagles

The Lille forward is currently Gernot Rohr’s first-choice striker, but he insists he would be pleased should the Red Devils striker return to the national set-up.

Manchester United’s striker Odion Ighalo is welcome to make his comeback to the Super Eagles fold and return as the team’s top striker, says former Sporting Charleroi man, Victor Osimhen.

Ighalo announced his international retirement immediately after the 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament. He scored five goals during the competition to lead the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish and emerged as the tournament’s highest goalscorer.

That was after he had proven to be the continent’s most prolific finisher during the qualifying series of the AFCON with his seven goals unmatched by no other.

However, since his retirement, Osimhen has stepped into the striker’s role in stunning fashion, scoring four goals in four matches. His strikes have lifted Gernot Rohr’s men to the top of the 2021 AFCON qualifying Group L.

But Ighalo’s sensational loan switch to the Old Trafford has projected him further forward with Rohr suggesting he would try to convince the United forward to reconsider his quit decision.

Osimhen is aware that Ighalo’s return may cost him his starting shirt, but the 20-year-old is more focused on the benefits he’s likely to reap from such a move.

“Ighalo is welcome (to the national team). He did so well for us in AFCON and, of course, in the qualifiers,” Osimhen said, as quoted by The Daily Post.

“He is welcome anytime. Whether I am on the bench or I’m starting, it will be very good for me to try and watch him play and try to help the team also. He is welcome anytime, for me to be on the bench or playing, I have no problem with that,” Osimhen added.
