Bad News For Sierra Leone Ahead Of AFCON Qualifying Clash Against Nigeria

The West African nation have suffered a massive blow as they will be without their head coach for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria.

Ghana-born Sellas Tetteh has quit as the head coach of Sierra Leone with the team set to battle Nigeria in an AFCON qualifying doubleheader in two weeks.

Tetteh is one of Africa’s most iconic football figures, having led Ghana to the 2009 FIFA U20 World Cup title.

The 63-year-old only took charge of the Leone Stars seven months ago, but he has reportedly left his post due to personal reasons.

“The Head Coach of the Sierra Leone National senior team Sellas Tetteh Teivi has tendered his letter of resignation to the President of the Sierra Leone Football Association,” the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) said in a statement released on Thursday, as quoted by Goal.

“In a letter dated the 11th March 2020 Coach Tetteh sighted “personal reasons” for his unexpected resignation.

“The President and Executive Committee of SLFA whiles accepting his decision expressed regret at the loss, to Sierra Leone Football, of one of Africa’s most iconic football heroes.

“SLFA wishes the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup Winning Coach great success in his future endeavours.”

Tetteh’s resignation is a massive blow to Sierra Leone who sit bottom of Group L, having picked up just one point after two games played.

They next travel to Nigeria on 27th March 2020 to face the Gernot Rohr’s-led 2013 African champions who boast six points out of six and sit comfortably atop their qualifying group.
