Super Eagles Legend Amunike Eyes Zamalek Coaching Job

Ex-Nigeria international Emmanuel Amunike only recently made a happy return to Egypt, but he already has his sights trained on the biggest job in the country.

The Misr Lel Maqassa’s new coach admitted that it is one of his dreams to coach one of Egypt’s biggest clubs, Zamalek.

The former Barcelona winger was hired by the struggling Egyptian side a fortnight ago, to help steer the club away from the relegation zone.

Amunike last coached the Tanzanian national team and was dismissed after a less-than-impressive showing at the 2019 AFCON.

Following his stint with Taifa Stars, the former Super Eagles hero returned to the country that first brought him fame as a youngster.

Amunike spent four years at Zamalek, and it was his excellent displays with the Egyptian giants that earned him a spot on Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON-winning team and, ultimately, the 1994 African Footballer of the Year award.

While the former Golden Eaglets coach confessed that his primary assignment is to help Misr Lel Maqassa out of present troubles, he has failed to rule out the chance of managing Zamalek in the nearest future.

“Egypt is my second country, where I had beautiful memories for three years, and I am happy with the warm welcome everywhere,” Amunike said in an interview with Al-Ahram Al-Riyadi magazine.

“Working at Zamalek is a hope for any coach as it is a big club, but I am happy at Maqassa, and I am working hard to achieve my ambitions there.

“Returning back to winning ways and also to become among the top four is my priority, and then I can think of any other steps.”

Misr Lel Maqassa currently lie 16th on the 18-team Egyptian Premier League table.
