The ex-Manchester United defender has sent a message to his former club’s new signing while on a visit to Nigeria.
Odion Ighalo completed a surprise deadline day move on loan to Old Trafford from Shanghai Shenhua.
The deal has been the cause of heated discussion between fans and analysts, with some hinting that the club could have gone for a better striker.
Former Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock suggested that the Red Devils move for the Nigeria International reek of desperation.
But a former Old Trafford hero is confident that there’s a lot of ways that Ighalo can help some of United’s players move forward. Ferdinand says he hopes the new man can provide the goals United desperately need.
“I just hope, I really want him to do well, to come in and help the guys,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel while on location in Lagos.
“He’s got great experience and the lads like Greenwood need that, Martial needs that, Daniel James needs that.
“At the same time, a lot of people are saying we’ve gone from Cavani, Mandzukic, Dzeko people like that. Yes, experienced players, but the level of the name is a lot less than what they’ve ended up with Ighalo.
“A lot of work was done on the last day. It was rushed.
“Ighalo, please come in and score goals, please come in and do the job, show us why Inter wanted you, why Tottenham wanted you. Come in and bang goals please and help those young guys too.”
The former Super Eagles star is in line to make his debut for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side against Chelsea in a fortnight.
