Corruption Is The Reason Gernot Rohr Is Still Super Eagles Coach – Ex-International, Esin

There are several Nigerian coaches capable of producing better results with the national team than the German tactician. However, corrupt officials are still keeping him on the job, says former Eagles star Etim Esin.

One of Nigeria’s most gifted players, Esin, has called on the nation’s football administrators to throw aside their plans to offer current Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, a new contract.

The former Bordeaux manager is expected to meet with the NFF sometime in February to thrash out the details of a new contract with his current one expiring in less than six months.

Rohr has done a decent job since taking over as the coach of the Super Eagles, helping the team qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and guiding the side to a third-place finish at the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

But Esin remains unimpressed even as he continues to hail the achievement of the late Stephen Keshi, who led Nigeria to her third African title triumph in 2013.

“Emmanuel Amuneke went to Tanzania and qualified them for the AFCON, Keshi did the same, at this level, let a Nigerian coach the Super Eagles,” Esin told the New TelegraghNG.

“I know the reason why NFF doesn’t want Rohr to leave because that’s the opportunity they need to siphon money in dollars. But in reality, with the level we are in football, something must be done in that aspect.

“Imagine 1994 we happened to be the best team on the continent, now we’re still looking for Oyinbo to come and coach the Eagles, and all he could achieve was to get to the semifinal of the AFCON, and also got eliminated from the group stage of the World Cup.

Other home-based coaches have done better than that at one time or another,” he added.

Recall that the late Stephen Keshi guided the Super Eagles to triumph at the 2013 AFCON, becoming the first Nigerian born coach to achieve the feat.

  • I dont know what Esin is smoking , but what ever it is someone should advise him that it is not good for him.
Else how can he be saying that local coaches are better than the foreign one we have at the moment. Did Esin not see what happened to the flying eagles at the under 20 world cup, did he not see how our under 23 failed to qualify for the Olympics ? Did Esin not see how our local eagles failed to qualify for CAN tournament. Oh les I forget dod Esin not see what happened to our under 18 team the golden eaglet .
Somebody please tell Esin to keep quiet and stop unnecessary empty recognition.
