Nigeria international goaltender Daniel Akpeyi was in inspirational form on Wednesday night as he led Kaizer Chiefs to a 3-0 thrashing of Highlands Park FC at the First National Bank Stadium.
Chiefs bounced back from a humbling 2-1 defeat to Super Sports United on January 3 to record their 12th league victory of the current campaign, with Akpeyi keeping yet another clean sheet.
It was the 33-year-old’s first clean sheet in four games, and it helped the league leaders maintain their hold at the top of the Premier Soccer League.
Mathoho handed the home side a first-half lead before Castro doubled Chiefs’ advantage shortly after the interval. Another Castro strike after the hour mark then completed the rout of the 6th-placed Highlanders.
Ernst Middendorp’s men now boast 38 points from 16 matches, six better than second placed champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.
Akpeyi has featured in 12 of those games, helping Chiefs to victory in 8 of them and suffering only two defeats.
