Kelechi Iheanacho: Manchester City’s Buy-Back Clause Worries Leicester City Boss

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has expressed the fear that champions Manchester City still have another two years to activate their option of repurchasing Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Northern Irish tactician is worried that the Citizens hold the ace in any transfer move involving their former striker.

The Nigeria international joined the Foxes in 2017 from Pep Guardiola’s side in a deal believed to be worth about £25million, but Man City inserted a buy-back clause of £50m. He signed a five-year contract which expires in 2022.

Iheanacho has overcome initial struggles at the club and has emerged as one of the key players at the King Power Stadium following a string of brilliant displays in recent months.

The 23-year-old has banged in eight goals in all competitions for the Foxes this term, the latest of which arrived in the 2-1 EFL Cup semifinal defeat to Aston Villa on Tuesday night. His crucial goals have seen him emerge as a capable back-up to former England international, Jamie Vardy.

However, Iheanacho’s growing profile is starting to be a source of concern for his club boss. And with Manchester City preparing for life after Sergio Aguero, a return for Iheanacho to the Etihad is still feasible.

“I’m not totally sure, but these things usually last the course of the first deal he signs,” Rodgers admitted according to quotes from Leicestermercury.co.uk, via Punch Nigeria. 

“So, Iheanacho joined on a five-year contract in 2017, so leading to 2022.

‘’Even if he negotiates an extended deal in that time, I’d expect the buy-back clause to still be applicable until 2022. “After that, it may be void.

Iheanacho is in his third season at Leicester City and has two years left on his initial five-year contract.
