Why Rohr Deserves A New Contract – Former Nigerian Defender Tells NFF

Ex international, Austin Eguavoen has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to reward the Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr with a fresh contract.

The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner, who revealed that he is not comfortable with the fact that Rohr does not live in Nigeria, believes the German tactician has what it takes to take achieve bigger success for the Super Eagles.

Rohr’s current deal expires in June 2020 with no new offer yet on the table. While he has led the team to two major competitions with a game to spare, he has come under criticism for not spending enough time in Nigeria and overlooking players in the local league.

Weighing into the matter, former Super Eagles manager, Austin Eguavoen told Sports Extra that the football body must address Rohr’s contract row, while also appealing to him to spend more time in Nigeria.

“He does deserve a new contract,” he said. “The only thing I am not too comfortable with is his staying out of the country. When [Clemens] Westerhof was our coach then he had his residence in Ikeja, very close to Airways ground, a duplex was hired for him for a long period of time.

“If he needs to succeed or keep succeeding as he has done so far, he needs to stay here long-term. If it’s short-term, then we are going to have problems.”

Meanwhile, another former Super Eagles star, Ifeanyi Udeze has urged Rohr to involve more players from the NPFL in his Super Eagles squad.
