German club welcomes 68,357 fans for world’s largest Christmas choir

They say football brings people together. Mix football and Christmas and you give a delightful year-end present to the fans of the game.

It was a beautiful sight to behold as German giants Borussia Dortmund welcomed a record 68,357 fans at this year’s Dortmund Sings Christmas Carols event held inside the Signal Iduna Park, Germany’s largest football arena.

Families came holding hands and sharing the Christmas spirit as the club opened its doors for the third year to its supporters for a medley of carols and a fireside chat.

“The family is the focus of the Christmas season. Borussia Dortmund has developed to such an extent that all those that support us have become part of the Borussia Dortmund family. We are proud of that,” said BVB president Dr Reinhard Raubull.

“It’s unbelievable: two years ago, 20,000 Borussia fans came, last year there were 40,000 and today over 68,000 turned up. It’s the biggest singing festival of its kind in the world.”

The club observed the traditional football time of two 45-minute slots as the crowd sang 24 traditional and modern Christmas classics as well as popular football songs.

The proceeds from the ticketing will be distributed to social projects in the Dortmund area, the club stated on its website.

Dortmund currently sit in third place on the Bundesliga table ahead of their final two games of the calendar year before the winter break. RB Leipzig and Monchengladbach sit in first and second place while perennial champions Bayern are in the fifth spot in a season that has been topsy-turvy at best.

As the decade ends, Soccernet has compiled the biggest footballers to have played for the Super Eagles. Here is another feature about the biggest matches that the Super Eagles have played in the outgoing decade.
