Former Premier League Defender Points Out The Missing Piece In Nigerian Born Rangers Star’s Game

Former Tottenham fullback and Scotland international Alan Hutton has backed Sheyi Ojo to overcome his present predicament, but he needs to start delivering consistently.

Liverpool-owned winger Sheyi Ojo has seen his playing time dry up in recent weeks due to his inconsistent performances for Rangers.

But one-time Rangers’ hero Hutton believes, if the England youth international becomes more consistent, he would regain the confidence of coach Steven Gerrard.

Ojo has scored 5 goals in 27 appearances across all competitions since his arrival at Rangers in July. But the last of those goals came way back on September 22, in a 1-0 home win over Feyenoord in a Europa League tie.

As his goals have dried up, so is his playing time with the 22-year-old having completed the full 90 minutes in just one of his last 10 matches for the Ibrox giants.

Alan Hutton, who won the Scottish Premier League with Rangers in 2005, is convinced that the youngster can make the Gers’ right-wing position his own should he add consistency to his game.

“To be honest I’m not surprised as it’s the one position up for grabs,” Hutton told Football Insider about Ojo.

“There are a few people vying for that front-right position, in flashes he has shown that he is a very good player.

“The thing with him is, he isn’t consistent enough for me and probably for Gerrard as it is a position he rotates.

“Ojo is in then he is out, Stewart can play there, Jones can too but he is injured, so that tells me he isn’t totally convinced.

“I think he is a very good player but he needs to be more consistent.”

Sheyi Ojo, who is still eligible to play for the Super Eagles, is spending the whole of the 2019/20 season on loan at Rangers from Liverpool.

The winger had already spent time out on loan with Wigan Athletic, Wolves, Fulham and French club Reims before moving to Rangers.
