Manchester City midfielder, Bernardo Silva has revealed that he would love to play in the Portuguese League before retiring from football.

The playmaker left his hometown of Lisbon is pursuit of first-team football with Monaco in France, but that meant leaving his beloved Benfica.

The Portuguese giants were unable to offer the then 19-year-old a route into the senior team, but he hasn’t given up hope of returning to the Estadio da Luz.

“I think what I did at Monaco and at City and for the national team, I think people in Portugal recognise that good work,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I would like to go back to Benfica one day. There is a gap to fill.

“I was a young kid who had a dream of playing for his home club and not being able to fulfil that dream was hard. But I had to make some decisions and I don’t regret it at all.”

Silva won the Ligue 1 title in 2017, helping Monaco break PSG’s monopoly of the French top flight, and has replicated that form in England.

His namesake David Silva had long been the tempo setter for City and replacing him had seemed an impossible task until Bernardo Silva’s arrival
