Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma was the subject of online abuse after his own goal denied the Blues a victory in their 2-2 draw against Sheffield United on Saturday.
The Blues were on course for a victory in their game against the Blades until the Frenchman inadvertently directed a Callum Robinson cross into his own net to give Sheffield an unlikely point.
Following the match, the former Everton player was subjected to racial abuse online. This comes after Tammy Abraham was also subjected to racial abuse after he missed a penalty in Chelsea’s Supercup loss to Liverpool.
There have been a couple of other incidents where players have had racial abuse directed at them. The likes of Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford have also been victims.
Speaking after the draw, Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard suggests he will take the same approach he took with Tammy but called on the owners of the social media platforms to do more in fishing out these people.
“I am probably going over the ground I did with Tammy before. “Firstly it is a person that does it, wherever they are hiding from, and secondly we have to look at social media and the platforms and give them some accountability to actually have people register who can be chased down for it.
“I think it is simple, until we get to that, and no matter how horrible that conversation is, we get tired talking about it. “Until there is some culpability, anyone can say anything to anyone. It’s not just racism, it could be calling them names, homophobia, sexism, it could be anything. “If we allow it, then unfortunately in modern society it is out there and it has to be dealt with.”
