In-form Nigeria striker scores again to lift Club Brugge

The Belgian giants were being held to a goalless draw at Oostende before substitute David Okereke entered the fray to score and hand over three precious points to Club Brugge who beat their host by 2 goals to nil.

Okereke came off the bench to head home the decisive opener, before fellow substitute and South Africa’s Percy Tau netted the second, as Club Brugge handed a first defeat of the season to Oostende as the Jupiler League entered Match Day 3.

The Lagos-born attacker now has four goals and an assist in just three First Division A matches.

After enjoying a fine start to his Belgium sojourn, Okereke was surprisingly left on the bench by coach Philippe Clement who chose to start Belgian Jelle Vossen instead, against Oostende who also had a perfect record of two wins out of two prior to kickoff.

There was nothing to separate the two unbeaten sides at halftime as both sides nullified the threat of each other in the early season top-of-the-table clash.

With only a quarter of an hour gone of the second half, coach Clement sent in the African duo of Okereke and Tau in place of Jelle Vossen and Sieve Schrijvers respectively.

The all-important opening goal arrived a short while later as the 21-year-old Nigerian headed home a fine Ruud Vormer cross.

Ten minutes later, Percy Tau grabbed the second to ensure the former champions left Versluys Arena with all the three points at stake.

Philippe Clement’s men are now the clear leaders on the league table after securing the maximum nine points out of their first three games.

Up next for Club Brugge is a UEFA Champions League qualifying second leg match away to Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday. Brugge won the first leg by a lone goal.
