Nigerian Stars To Look Out For In The English Championship

With less than three days to the commencement of the English Championship after months of break, teams will be battling on how to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Soccernet focuses on Nigerian players who could light up the Championship this season.

Sami Ajayi (West Brom)

Despite his omission from the Super Eagles squad at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, the former Rotherham United midfielder was snapped up by Championship side, West Brom this summer.

Confident with the ball and a blessed with the sight for visionary passes, Semi Ajayi, who scored eight goals in all competitions for his former club last season, would definitely hit the ground running for West Brom when the season kicks off this weekend.

Oghenekharo Etebo (Stoke City)

Simply one of Nigeria’s ‘workaholic’ player and combative in nature, Oghenekaro Etebo has shown what he’s capable of displaying during the 2018-2019 season with Stoke City, where he marshalled the midfield with great composure.

With the Championship set to begin this weekend, Etebo remains of the few Nigerian players that would light up the season with his goals, agility, and tackles for the Potters.

Dominic Iorfa (Sheffield Wednesday)

Yet to decide on his international future, however, Dominic Iorfa has remain an integral part of Sheffield Wednesday team since joining the team from Wolveramton Wanderers.

Solid at the back and often time play as a right full back, Iorfa distinguished himself in the previous season with his defensive prowess and is expected to still part of the squad in the Championship.

Sammy Ameobi (Nottingham Forest)

Tall and always having an eye for goals, Sammy Ameobi, who once played for Newcaastle United with is elder brother, Shola Ameobi managed to net four goals for Bolton Wanderers in the 2018-2019 season.

However, having signed for Nottingham Forest on loan from Bolton, Sammy will be hoping to raise the standard of his game and deliver the goals that could send the team to the Premier League.
