Change In AFCON Calendar: No More Club Vs Country Row Again – Ugbade

By Augustine Akhilomen

Ex international, Nduka Ugbade has lauded the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) decision of moving the tournament to June and July which will prevent the ’embarrassment’ of club vs Country row during international engagement.

The bi-annual tournament which usually comes up in January and February has also being expanded from 16 and 24 teams, paving way for more participation.

Ugbade was a member key member of the Golden Eaglets that won the 1985 U-16 World Cup and insisted that CAF has done the right thing to have expanded the competition and solving the issue of club vs country row during international engagement.

“Taking the competition to June and July is also good because it will stop the usual complaints by European clubs about releasing players. Also it will give us the opportunity to see the best African players, there wouldn’t be any excuse not to attend.”
