Clattenburg named Referee of the year

English referee, Mark Clattenburg has been named the best referee in the world at the Globe Soccer Awards on Tuesday.
The experienced referee has had an exceptional 2016, taking charge of both the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid and the Euro 2016 final in France.

Clattenburg completed a trio of huge matches by taking charge of the FA Cup final between Crystal Palace and Manchester United. Aside from his involvement at showpiece fixtures, Clattenburg also demonstrated his exceptional ability to control any game, no matter the circumstance.
He was the referee in charge when Croatian hooligans threw flares onto the pitch in the match between the Czech Republic and Croatia at Euro 2016.

Clattenburg acted swiftly to move the players away from the burning flares and suspended the game for several minutes. Other notable victors at the Globe Soccer Awards included Fernando Santos, who was named coach of the year after leading Portugal to victory at Euro 2016.

Real Madrid were named club of the year after they won the Champions League, and their president Florentino Perez was named president of the year. Cristiano Ronaldo was unsurprisingly named player of the year.

Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery was also presented with a special award by FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The Globe Soccer Awards are held in Dubai over December 27 and 28.
