Iniesta picks up knee injury vs Sevilla
After carrying out further tests, FC Barcelona have released an official statement revealing the severity of the injuries sustained by captain Andres Iniesta and defender Jeremy Mathieu during the club’s Super Cup win over Sevilla on Sunday.
Barça put themselves in a comfortable position to seal their first trophy of 2016/2017 with goals from Luis Suarez and Munir seeing of Sevilla 2-0 at the Sanchez Pizjuan in the first keg of their Supercopa de Espana tie, but the win was soured by the injuries of Andres Iniesta and Jeremy Mathieu.
Mathieu picked up a knocked on the 25th minute and could not continue as he struggled with his hamstring. The Frenchman was replaced by Lucas Digne. After tests carried out on him this morning, Barcelona reveal the player sustained a hamstring injury that will keep him out of action for an estimated three weeks, with future availability depending on the progress of the injury.
Barça fans can have a sigh of relief about Andres Iniesta. The Barcelona captain looked to be in severe pains after a collision with Mariano in the first half and he was replaced by Denis Suarez. The good knees is that he won’t spend too long in the sidelines as his face suggested. According to the medical report, Iniesta suffered a strained posterior capsule in his right ankle but will be out for just two weeks and will be available for FC Barcelona’s game against Atletico Madrid in La Liga.
This means Iniesta and Mathieu will definitely miss the second leg of the Super Cup and also the kickoff of the new Liga season. However, if Iniesta gets a quicker recovery there’s a possibility he’s fit in time for the crucial second La Liga game against Athletic Bilbao.
FC Barcelona’s squad depth is now proving to be important as Iniesta and Mathieu joined Ter Stegen, Neymar and Rafinha as unavailable players for the second leg but the presence of Lucas Digne, Denis Suarez, Andre Gomes, Samper, Masip and Umtiti covers their blemishes. The second leg of the Spanish Super Cup holds on Wednesday at the Camp Nou.
