FC Barcelona played their third and final International Champions Cup preseason game of the summer against English club Liverpool and it ended up being a game to forget for the Catalans
as they were mauled 4-0 by the reds at the Wembley stadium.
Goals from Sadio Mane, Divock Origi, Marko Grujic and an own-goal from defender Javier Mascherano meant La Liga Champions FC Barcelona got the beating of their lives by Jurgen Klopp’s men in a highly-anticipated friendly game in England, destroying their hopes of making it three wins from three in the International Champions Cup.
The win was a fascinating experience for Liverpool whose fans came out en masse to watch their team play against Barça who has the best ever footballer playing for their team, and also Luis Suarez and Javier Mascherano, two players who formerly wore the all-red of the Merseyside team.
It was announced during the game that a total of 89,845 spectators were present to watch the Liverpool-Barcelona game in Wembley on Saturday, making it the second highest ever attendance for a football game in the history of the new Wembley stadium since it’s opening in 2007. This came as no surprise as the game was a highly-anticipated one and throughout the game you could hear the huge roar from the crowd to support their team.
The attendance became the second highest football attendance in the history of the stadium and it was just 29 away from matching the record attendance which was a massive 89,874 spectators during the FA Cup final game between Portsmouth and Cardiff City in 2008. It is fascinating to know that had it been 30 more fans were present at the New Wembley on Saturday it would have been a new record.
The number shows FC Barcelona are appreciated all around the world as the fans of other clubs are always looking forward to watching them play live.
The most beautiful thing of the game, however, was the entire stadium standing up from their seats to applaud Barça striker Luis Suarez as he was subbed off in the second half. The Striker spent three seasons with Liverpool and almost won them the league title, he helped by scoring 69 league goals and also won the European golden shoe.
