Luis Suarez furious on the bench for Uruguay in their Copa America loss to Venezuela |
It was a terrible day for FC Barcelona striker
Luis Suarez as his national team Uruguay were shocked 1-0 by Venezuela in their second group game of the tournament which means the team has crashed out with no chance of advancing through to the next round.
Luis Suarez was on the bench throughout the game and couldn’t help his team out after Coach Oscar Tabarez didn’t play him saying the player was not 100% fit for the game. However, Suarez was seen furious on the bench, throwing his boots and his bench shirt away in annoyance about the fact that the coach didn’t allow him play.
After a 3-1 loss to Mexico in their first group game of the
Copa America Centenario, Uruguay came into the game against Venezuela as favourites and they needed nothing but a win to have a chance of making the next round. However, Venezuela player Salomon Rondon killed their hopes with a 36th-minute strike.
Alejandro Guerra won the ball for Venezuela in his own half before unleashing a straight lob from the halfway line to try to beat Uruguay goalkeeper Muslera who could only tip the ball off the woodwork, but unfortunately for him, Rondon was on hand to score from the rebound which turned out to be the only goal of the game that sends Uruguay packing from the tournament.
Uruguay had chances to get at least a goal but their main Striker Edinson Cavani looked like he didn’t bring his scoring boots to the field. He missed a chance to give his team the lead on the 15th minute and blew a free kick wide 15 minutes later. The striker had two glorious chances to equalize in the dying stages, one on the 89th minute when he did well to cut through the Venezuela defence but somehow fired his shot wide off goal.
The second chance came in stoppage time, it was a glorious opportunity that needed Cavani just to tap the ball in the net but Venezuela goalkeeper Dani Hernandez did superbly well to stop the shot. It was clear Uruguay missed Luis Suarez in this game and the player also was mad at himself, fate and his coach for not being able to play due to a hamstring injury picked up in Barça’s
Copa del Rey final win against Sevilla.
With Uruguay out of the tournament, it means Luis Suarez chances of winning the Ballon d’Or in January became slimmer but his chances will be revived if he pulls off wonderful displays in the beginning of the 2016/2017 season for FC Barcelona..
