It was once called a weak league and a two-horse race dominated by either FC Barcelona or Real Madrid, but now the Spanish La Liga have shown to the world that it deserve more praises than that which is given to them by the media and other football fans around the world.
Judging by the recent performances by various teams from Europe’s top 5 leagues, one can easily deduce that the Spanish La Liga is by far the best league in the world when it comes to quality. Teams from Spain are dominating Europe like it is a competition played by Spanish teams and some bunch of little kids who just play football for the sake of it.
In the last two seasons, all possible European tournament have been won by Spanish teams. Champions League 2014 was won by Real Madrid after Los Blancos defeated Atletico Madrid (another Spanish team) in the final. That same year, Sevilla won their third Europa League title by beating Benfica in the final.
The season after, FC Barcelona won the Champions League by defeating Juventus in the final whilst Sevilla won their second consecutive Europa League and a record fourth title by defeating Dnipro in the final. This means that all 6 possible European titles in the past two years – Uefa Champions League x2, Europa League x2, and the Uefa Super Cup x2 – have all been won by Spanish teams.
This Spanish dominance has continued this season as expected. 7 Spanish teams qualified for Europe: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla (qualified for the CL automatically after winning the Europa League), Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao. Both the Champions League and the Europa League have reached the semifinal stage which means 8 teams are left in Europe right now and of these 8 teams left, 4 are Spanish teams (Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Sevilla). The most interesting aspect of this is not that 50% of the remaining teams are from Spain but that the other 3 Spanish teams that have crashed out of Europe were knocked out by their fellow Spanish teams.
FC Barcelona were knocked out by Atletico Madrid, Valencia were knocked out by Sevilla in the Round of 16 of the Europa League while Bilbao were knocked out by Sevilla in the quarter final, this means that there would’ve been a huge possibility of 7 Spanish teams making it to the Semifinals of the Europa League and Champions League, the dominance is unreal.
The first legs of the semifinals across both competitions have been played and all Spanish teams have the advantage to go through. Real Madrid got a 0-0 draw away from home against Manchester City, Atletico Madrid pulled off a superb performance to beat European heavyweights Bayern Munich 1-0 at the Calderon, Villarreal defeated 5-time CL champions Liverpool 1-0 and Sevilla got a 2-2 draw away from home against Shakhtar Donetsk, this means we’re likely to witness all-spanish finals across these competitions as Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Sevilla all have the advantage going into the second leg.
ONLY THE TOP TEAMS IN SPAIN ARE GOOD, THE BOTTOM TEAMS ARE VERY WEAK.
This is a very wrong concept, here’s why: the Spanish La Liga have 3 of the best five teams in the World in Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, these three teams are very strong, strong enough to finish top 3 in every other top leagues in the world. Smaller Spanish teams are not weak, they are just not too good when you compare them to Real Madrid and Barcelona, two teams that possess the best players in the World with a rich history, this is the reason why teams like Sevilla, Villarreal, Bilbao do not do well to win the League in Spain but come to Europe to impose their kingship on other European teams, even Malaga almost made the CL semifinal when they got the chance. How many teams can come to La Liga and win the league with Barça, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid present? Possibly none. But what if Barça, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid go to other leagues? There’s a big chance any of them wins it, that’s just the case.
It’s high time La Liga got the praises it deserve, it may not be the best league in terms of sponsorship, but it’s the best in the world when we talk of quality football, quality teams and quality players, the Spanish La Liga is the best league in the World.
