GLO ends NPFL sponsorship as Zenith, Etisalat battle for position

As the mutual agreement between the League Management Company (LMC) and telecommunications giant Globacom officially ends, one of Nigeria’s foremost commercial banks, Zenith Bank and telecommunications giants, Etisalat are in contention to become the new sponsors of the Nigeria Professional Football League, Goal.com reports.

During the annual general meeting of the LMC, it was announced that the contract with title sponsors, Globacom, has elapsed, following the end of the 2016 Super Four pre-season tournament.

It was disclosed that the LMC which was established in 2012 agreed a three-year sponsorship agreement worth N1.9b in 2013 with Globacom, which brought about the Glo Premier League.

On Wednesday February 8, the LMC announced that the agreement with Globacom as sponsors of the league has expired, with the league open to ‘all interested corporate bodies’.

According to sources close to Goal.com, Zenith Bank and Etisalat have held ‘preliminary discussions’ with the LMC over the possibility of picking up the title sponsorship.

It remains unclear whether there would be a deal before February 21, the kick-off date for the new season.

In the same vein, the English Premier League will wear a new look next season as the league organisers have released a new logo as the symbol for England’s football top division over the next several years.

England’s elite league will continue without a title sponsor from the start of the 2016/17 season as it would no more be associated with Barclays bank.
