Federations Cup champions Akwa United FC have continued their good form, as they emerged NFF Charity Shield champions, following their penalty shootout win over league champions Enyimba at the National Stadium in Abuja on Wednesday.
Akwa United goalkeeper Bassey Akpan was the hero as his saves in the shootouts ensured Maurice Cooreman’s side clinched their third trophy in four months and a second trophy in quick succession after they conquered all before them at the NPFL Super 4.
Enyimba had the best chances during the match against 10-man Akwa United, who had Adio sent off for two yellow cards in the second half, but some wayward finishing in addition to heroic goalkeeping from Akpan ensured the game ended goalless before the winner was decided from the penalty shootouts.
Akwa United are presently proving impenetrable under Belgian tactician Maurice Cooreman having not conceded in the last six matches and have only conceded just once in seven games under him. They are now the NFF Charity Shield champions in addition to being the Federations Cup champions and the NPFL Super 4 winners.
