Amuneke to turn down Flying Eagles Job

Emmanuel Amuneke may turn down a rare opportunity to coach both the national U-17 and U-20 sides.

Amuneke led the Golden Eaglets to the FIFA U-17 World Cup title in Chile two months ago, two years after he won the previous edition in the United Arab Emirates as an assistant coach.

The Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick, announced last week that the former African Footballer of the Year would continue as the Golden Eaglets coach and even combine the role with being an assistant coach to Manu Garba in the Flying Eagles.

But rather than get excited over the announcement, the former Barcelona coach said he was averse to the idea of taking up an appointment offered without following the appropriate channels. Amuneke has remained clear on the need for a review of his role as the Eaglets coach, giving hints he may not return.

“No doubt coaching the national team is something I consider a huge privilege and when you even get to win honours with the national team, I think there are very few experiences that can beat that,” the former Zamalek of Egypt star said. “However, I don’t subscribe to certain situations and certainly I don’t think announcing the appointment of a coach on air without a meeting with the party involved or a written contract is not how I’ll choose to work.”
