It is no longer news that Lionel Messi breaks records in every single game he plays. The Barcelona talisman is at it again as he broke four records with his goal in Barça’s 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup second leg.
Despite Barça’s loss, the Argentine will have something to cheer about, though it is 100% certain he isn’t aware of the records as he is even running away from awards nowadays.
1. Messi’s goal against Bilbao was his 11th in the Spanish Super Cup, extending the record as player with the most goals in the tournament’s history. He achieved this feat in just 13 games and no other player has up to 8 goals with Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez being his closest rival with 7 strikes.
2. With the goal, Messi became the only player who scored in each of the five different competitions (La Liga, Copa del Rey, Champions League, Uefa Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup) of the year so far. The Club World Cup is the only competition remaining for him to complete a 100% scoring record.
3. Messi became the only player to score in 5 different editions of the Spanish Super Cup finals. He did it 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and now in 2015 beating the previous record of four set by former teammate Xavi Hernandez and Hristo Stoichkov.
4. Messi has now equalled Athletic Bilbao legend Telmo Zarra as players with most official goals in top-flight competitions against Spanish Clubs with 335 strikes, a record which the Argentine will surely move clear off Zarra in the next couple of games.
One can count the number of records Messi is yet to break as the 28-year-old is irresistible. He will aim to continue smashing the few records left as Barça begin their defence of the treble when they take on Athletic Bilbao in the Liga opener on Sunday.
