The parents of former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas have expressed their annoyance on the club’s treatment of their son with the star’s mother stating she’d have loved Iker to join a respectable club like Barca
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has left the Santiago Bernabeu where he’s been in the last 25 years.
The 34-year-old joined Portuguese club FC Porto but didn’t get the best treatment from the club where he won 19 titles and his parents – who haven’t spoken with their son since 2010- aren’t happy with Iker’s situation.
“I don’t want controversy. I don’t talk to my son, but I want the best for him and that no one takes advantage of him. I just want his advisors to give him the best advice so he doesn’t end up scrubbing toilets like German World Champion Andreas Brehme or broke like Victor Bahia.
“We don’t plan on going to a tribute to Iker, if there is one. We are not going to be a part of that charade, the show that Florentino hastily put on as he rushes to make it look as if he’s behaved well with my son, when that isn’t the case. We’ll only go if our son asks us to. I’m envious of how Pirlo left his club and I don’t understand why Real Madrid didn’t do the same for my son. He’s given everything to the club and has been loyal.
“During the eras of Lorenzo Sanz and Calderon [Real Madrid’s past presidents], my son was taken care of, but not with Florentino. This president never wanted Iker because he wasn’t tall. He likes tall goalkeepers. He was always obsessed with signing Buffon. My Iker has endured what has not been written, he’s endured psychological pressure and has been treated differently than other players. They vilified him for five years. It was all very unfair and has taken its toll on him mentally.”
Iker’s mother, Mari Carmen went on to say she didn’t like her son’s move to “third-tier” club FC Porto and would have preferred her son joining Barcelona – a club of gentlemen.
“Porto? My God. When it came out that he was looking for a house in Rome, I called him and asked ‘Iker, what are you doing? You’re not leaving.’ Now imagine Porto. They are a Segunda B team to a player with the level of Iker. A world champion can’t end his career at Porto. He could end up wherever he wanted and I wouldn’t have minded at all if he’d gone to Barca, because they are a club of gentlemen,” she said.
Xavi Hernandez left Barcelona after spending 24 years with the club and was given an unforgettable farewell tribute that struck the world of football.
Mari went on to say Florentino Perez has always hated Iker Casillas and had been looking for ways to ship out the Spanish captain.
“We knew that Iker winning the World Cup left Florentino livid. He didn’t want Iker to succeed and much less the person he hated bring home the World Cup for Spain,” she stated.
