Southampton manager Russell Martin is optimistic that Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu will be available for selection when the Saints host Chelsea on Wednesday evening, Soccernet.ng reports.
Onuachu missed Southampton’s 1-1 draw with Brighton last Friday after sustaining an injury during the Premier League clash with Liverpool the previous week.
Although Martin considered including the towering forward in his squad for the Brighton trip, the decision was made to rest him to prevent further aggravation.
The Saints manager is hopeful the Nigerian international, who received applause for his display against Liverpool on his first Saints start of the season, can be ready to face the visiting Blues Army.
“We’re hopeful that Paul will be involved on Wednesday, which will be good for us,” Martin said as per Yahoo Sports.
Onuachu impressed during his 52-minute outing against Liverpool, showcasing glimpses of the form that made him a prolific scorer during his time in Turkey.
The 30-year-old joined Southampton in 2023 but spent last season on loan at Trabzonspor, where he notched an impressive 17 goals and four assists in just 25 matches, helping the Turkish side secure European football.
Despite his achievements abroad, Onuachu is still searching for his first goal or assist for Southampton, having made 19 appearances for the club.
However, his return would provide a timely boost for Martin as Southampton face a resurgent Chelsea side sitting second in the Premier League table.
Adding to Onuachu’s appeal is his nomination for the FIFA Puskás Award, with one of his spectacular goals for Trabzonspor recognized for its acrobatic brilliance.
His potential involvement could give Southampton a crucial edge in what promises to be a challenging fixture.
