“He will miss chances”- Rangers assistant coach backs Cyriel Dessers amid criticisms

Rangers assistant coach Neil McCann has backed Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers to deliver despite the criticisms he has gotten for missing chances, Soccernet.ng reports.

Dessers has come under a lot of criticism since he joined the Gers from Cremonese two years ago. The Super Eagles striker has contributed 45 goals and 16 assists in 100 appearance for the Gers. However, he has gotten a reputation for missing a lot of chances.

This has put him in the bad books of many Rangers fans, with some clamoring for his sale or for Hamza Igamane to displace him as the first-choice striker.

Nonetheless, the club has continued to back him. And he has occasionally rescued them – case in point last week – when he scored the winner in their 4-3 thriller against Dundee.

Now, ahead of the Gers’ next game against Hibernian at the Ibrox Stadium, Rangers assistant coach McCann has backed Dessers to continue to deliver for the Gers.

“Cyriel Dessers will always divide opinion because he will miss chances, but this is the life of a striker,” McCann said.

“I was so proud of him after the game (against Dundee) because he didn’t stop pushing and making runs – we need to create chances for him and that is what we are doing.”

Will Cyriel Dessers start against Hibernian?

Cyriel Dessers will likely lead the line for Rangers when they play Hibernian on Saturday. The Super Eagles striker has two goals in his last five games against them and he will be looking to add to that tally.

Dessers has also been in decent form recently, scoring three goals in his last five games. Barring any last-minute development, coach Barry Ferguson should give him the nod to start.
