Super Eagles and Fulham defender, Calvin Chinedu Bassey, was included in Troy Deeney’s BBC Matchday 29 Team of the Week after a brilliant performance in his side’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Soccernet.ng reports.
The former Rangers centre-back was immaculate at the back as his side sealed a 2-0 win over Ange Postecoglu’s side, and it was a moment to celebrate for Fulham as they drew closer to their dreams of playing in Europe next season. Additionally, it was Marco Silva’s 200th Premier League match as a gaffer.
Deeney, who was famously known as a Watford striker before he hung his boots, took up punditry with BBC and is now tasked with picking the BBC Team of the Week.
In goal, the former Watford striker opted for Brentford’s Mark Flekken who made five stunning saves in his side’s 2-1 win over the in-form Bournemouth. The Bees are enjoying another solid campaign in the English top-flight, and are 11th on the league table, three points behind Andoni Iraola’s side.
Everton’s Jake O’Brien was Deeney’s pick for the right-back position. The young Irishman popped up with a last-minute equalizer against West Ham United after tirelessly running the length of the pitch.
The pairing in central defence was Manchester United’s Mattijs De Ligt and Fulham’s Calvin Bassey. The duo were impressive in their side’s respective wins. The Reds sealed a 3-0 win over Leicester City while the Cottagers sealed a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the London Derby.
“He doesn’t get as much credit as Joachim Andersen next to him, but he was bullish, strong, solid in the tackle and epitomised that Fulham team,” Deeney wrote in his column about Calvin Bassey.
Deeney opted for a midfield trio. Brentford’s Christian Nørgaard found the back of the net in his side’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth, while Omar Marmoush was imperious against Brighton, scoring his fourth Premier League goal for the Cityzens since joining in January.
“A key part of how Man Utd are playing. Fernandes gets more credit for his assists and goals, two assists and a goal obviously, and as this Man Utd team gets better so will he,” Deeney wrote in his column about Bruno Fernandes.
Down the middle, Wolverhampton Wanderers striker, Jørgen Strand Larsen made the team of the week after his brace sealed a 2-1 win for his side against Paul Onuachu‘s Southampton.
“How Man Utd will wish they had kept this player. He has been exceptional for Nottingham Forest. Two wonderful goals, both completely different, and you are seeing a young man who has confidence and a self-belief.
“He has had a difficult journey, being rejected by Man Utd, but has picked himself back up, with no complaining, no sulking, and has just gone out and shown what a good player he really is,” the former Watford striker wrote about Elanga.
On the sidelines, Deeney chose Wolves manager, Vitor Pereira as the coach of the week.
