Player Ratings: Nigeria 1-1 Zimbabwe – Osimhen shines as Chirewa punishes Eagles late on

Victor Osimhen’s 74th-minute header seemed to have secured all three points for Nigeria, but a lapse in concentration late in the game saw Tawanda Chirewa rescue a point for Zimbabwe in Uyo, Soccernet reports.

Nigeria let the game slip through their fingers with a late defensive error. While Osimhen and Bassey impressed, others failed to rise to the occasion.

The Super Eagles will need to be sharper and more clinical if they’re to avoid further disappointments in the qualifiers.

Here’s how the Super Eagles fared:

Stanley Nwabali – 6/10
Did his best between the sticks and made a few decent stops. However, he was left exposed for the equaliser and couldn’t keep a clean sheet.

Bright Osayi-Samuel – 7/10
Energetic down the right flank. He was solid defensively and contributed going forward, providing width and options.

William Troost-Ekong – 5/10
Strong in the first half with commanding clearances and aerial dominance. However, he faded badly in the second half and was at fault for the Zimbabwe equaliser due to a sloppy mistake.

Calvin Bassey – 8/10
One of Nigeria’s standout performers. Made several timely interventions and was confident bringing the ball out of defence. Also supported attacks with intent.

Ola Aina – 7.5/10
Played out of position on the left but still impressed. He delivered the inch-perfect cross that Osimhen converted and defended resolutely when called upon.

Wilfred Ndidi – 8/10
Controlled the midfield with his intelligent positioning. Made crucial interceptions and recovered possession numerous times. A real anchor for the team.

Alex Iwobi – 6/10
Decent in patches. Missed a few chances that could’ve changed the game but showed flashes of creativity in midfield.

Moses Simon – 5/10
Largely ineffective. Delivered some crosses, but none found the mark. Failed to influence the game as expected.

Ademola Lookman – 5.5/10
Struggled to impact the game and looked uncomfortable playing out of position. Couldn’t find his rhythm in the final third.

Victor Osimhen – 8.5/10
Nigeria’s best performer. As always, he led the line with determination and took his goal brilliantly. He was a constant threat to Zimbabwe’s backline.

Substitutes
Tolu Arokodare – 6.5/10
Came on and helped link up play leading to Osimhen’s goal. Showed promise with his movement and hold-up play.
