Naija boys at Man United: Joshua Zirkzee crowns Chido Obi an ‘Oga’

Manchester United forwards Joshua Zirkzee and Chido Obi-Martin have recently caught attention for their Nigerian heritage, Soccernet.ng reports.

Following a social media post and comment exchange, former Arsenal academy player Chido Obi-Martin jokingly earned a “boss” status from Zirkzee.

Both players have joined forces at Old Trafford and share Nigerian roots despite being born in Europe.

Chido Obi-Martin was born in Denmark to Nigerian parents and has spent time in England. He has represented both England and Denmark at youth level, making him eligible to play for all three countries.

Similarly, Zirkzee is eligible to represent Nigeria through his mother but has opted to play for the Netherlands, his birth country.

Despite their national team choices, both players embrace their Nigerian heritage, where they have bonded at Manchester United and exchanged Nigerian slang.

After a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena, Zirkzee shared a match photo on social media. Chido Obi-Martin responded with, “My boy,” to which Zirkzee replied, “Oga.”

“Oga” is a Nigerian slang term meaning “boss,” which shows how the former Bologna forward  playfully acknowledged his teammate’s Nigerian roots.

Earlier, Zirkzee spoke about the possibility of representing Nigeria if the Netherlands did not come calling. However, he admitted breaking into the Nigerian squad would be tough given the country’s attacking depth.

“It’s not easy to say. If the Netherlands aren’t calling, then I’ll choose Nigeria. Are they even calling? Maybe. Nigeria is not a country that you just choose because you cannot play for your homeland. The competition there for attackers is perhaps just as great as in the Dutch team. Nigeria has Boniface from Leverkusen and Osimhen from Napoli. And they have many more attackers,” he previously stated.

Shortly after, Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman included Zirkzee in his provisional squad for matches against Germany and Scotland.
