“Scorer of good goals” – Rangers legend weighs in on Dessers’ first 100 games in blue

Former Rangers and Scotland forward, Kris Boyd, has weighed in on the performance of Super Eagles striker, Cyriel Dessers, in his first 100 games for Barry Ferguson‘s side, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 30-year-old moved to Hampden Park from Italian side, Cremonese, in the summer of 2023, and his time in Scotland has been dilly dally.

Dessers has proven to be an enigma who can frustrate and impress at the same time due to his inconsistencies in front of goal. Nonetheless, he’s put up decent numbers for Rangers, scoring 45 goals and providing 16 assists in his first century of games.

Dessers‘ numbers put him in third place on Rangers’ all-time list of scorers who had the most goals in their first 100 appearances in the 21st century, just behind Shota Arveladze (48), Alfredo Morales (57), and club legend -Kris Boyd (68).

Many questioned the output of the Super Eagles attacker, and Rangers even attempted to sell the Belgium-born Nigeria, but it appears the tides have turned.

Boyd, who scored 126 goals for Rangers during his playing days, admitted Dessers’ finishing might be questionable, but praised the 1.85m for his ‘never say die’ character.

What Boyd said

“For me, I think it’s the type of chances that Cyriel Dessers misses. There are ones where you think it’s an absolute certainty, but he’ll scuff them, and on other occasions, from absolutely nowhere, he produces a good finish.

“I think he’s a scorer of good goals. I don’t think he’s a natural finisher as such, but his numbers are decent. You kind of feel sorry for him sometimes because of the criticism he gets when he misses chances, but he won’t throw in the towel. He’ll always go back for more. There’s no getting away from it.

“In the game against Dundee, I knew it’d come. He’d spunned chances several times, and I said Rangers would win when Dessers scores, and he went on to score the winner,” the 41-year-old said in an interview with the Scottish Sun.

Dessers wasn’t picked by Eric Chelle for Nigeria‘s games during the March International break, but he’s gone about his club business well.

While there’s barely anything left for Rangers to salvage domestically, the fighting spirit they displayed yesterday will be crucial in their UEFA Europa League campaign.

The Gers will play against Athletic Club in the Europa League quarter-final on the 10th of April. The first leg will be played at Hampden Park, giving the Scottish side the home advantage.
