“I’ve got high standards”- What Rangers boss Barry Ferguson said about Cyriel Dessers after Kilmarnock brace

Rangers coach Barry Ferguson has praised Super Egales striker Cyriel Dessers following his brace in the 4-2 victory over Kilmarnock in the Sottish Premiership on Wednesday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Dessers turned out to be the hero for the Gers against Kilmarnock as they launched a difficult comeback win. Despite being the favorites to win, the Gers fell two goals behind after just 14 minutes. However, they rose from their slumber in the 35th minute after Vaclav Cerny pulled one back for them.

Then Rangers grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half. Dessers led the charge, scoring twice in the opening 17 minutes of the second half.

The 30-year-old hitman scored the equalizer in the 53rd minute before putting Rangers ahead in the 62nd minute. Then, Nedim Bajrami scored the fourth in the 85th minute to seal the 4-2 win for the former Scottish champions.

After the game, Ferguson, who had his first game as Rangers boss, was highly appreciative of Dessers.

“I thought Cyriel led the line really well,” Ferguson said, per Glasgow Times.

“It’s just me. Listen, I’ve got high standards. And I think sometimes I look and they (the players) are thinking ‘God, what have we got here on the sidelines?’

“But listen, that’s what it’s all about. And I thought he was excellent. And listen, I got a response. They responded to me. I got a reaction from them.

“And listen, one thing I’ve always said about Cyriel is, he gives you everything he’s got. And I thought tonight, he was excellent.”

Ferguson’s comments indicate that Dessers might be the first striker at Rangers for a while.

Why Cyriel Dessers has to keep scoring

Cyriel Dessers has been maligned a lot at Rangers. He even lost his place to Hamza Igamane at the turn of the year, albeit things have returned to normal now.

His goals have put him at an advantage, as he seems to now have the strong backing of a manager who believes in him. He has to keep banging in goals consistently and reduce his misses significantly.

If he fails to do this, Igamane, who is hungry for game time, might overtake him eventually.
