Can ‘Untalented’ Victor Boniface revive Super Eagles 2026 World Cup hopes?

Bayer Leverkusen star, Victor Boniface, has been a topic of discussion in the Nigerian football scene after a female podcaster labeled him ‘untalented,’ Soccernet.ng reports.

The comment by the female Podcaster has sparked widespread debate among Nigerian football fans. Despite the criticism, the Super Eagles striker has responded on the pitch with a goal against FC Koln.

Boniface recently returned from a three-month injury setback, but his absence did little to slow him down. Since his comeback, he has found the net twice in three appearances, which proves that the sharpness of the 24-year-old in front of goal remains intact.

Nigeria’s World Cup Qualification Struggles

The Super Eagles currently sit second-bottom in Group C with just three points of a possible 12 points from four matches played so far.

Their subpar performances so far have left their qualification hopes hanging by a thread, which makes the upcoming fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe must-win encounters.

With Nigeria struggling in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, it becomes an unanswered question whether Boniface will return to offer a glimmer of hope for Eric Chelle’s debut matches.

Eric Chelle: New boss Factor

The arrival of new head coach Chelle makes things even more difficult to predict. While the Malian tactician will be eager to turn things around, his success will largely depend on the form of key players like Boniface.

The former Union Saint-Gilloise forward has already proven his ability to deliver at club level, where he played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s impressive Bundesliga campaign.

However, the Nigeria international is yet to notch a goal for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, which was his last clash.

Boniface’s Goal Drought: Club Form vs. International Struggles

Boniface has been a prolific goal scorer for his club, but his international record with the Super Eagles has been less impressive.

Since debuting for Nigeria in September 2023, Boniface has accumulated 11 appearances without scoring a goal.

In contrast, his club performances have been outstanding. During the 2023-24 Bundesliga season, he netted 14 goals in 23 appearances. This season, he has continued his fine form, scoring seven goals in 12 domestic league matches, averaging 0.89 goals per 90 minutes.

The disparity between his club and international performances has raised questions about his ability to replicate his domestic success on the international stage.

Can Boniface Deliver a Shocking Turnaround?

Boniface hopes to break his international goal drought when Nigeria faces Rwanda and Zimbabwe in the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Although, it is difficult to rule out his struggles for the Super Eagles, the Leverkusen striker remains one who can pose threats to the opposition’s defence.

However, with Nigeria set to play a must-win clash, Boniface may rise to the occasion to prove that he can make a difference even for Nigeria.
