Official: Jose Peseiro gets first coaching job 12 months after dumping Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has been appointed as the new head coach of Egyptian giants Zamalek, Soccernet.ng reports.

Peseiro was in charge of the Super Eagles for two years, and his tenure was filled with controversy. The Portuguese tactician started poorly, losing his first two games. However, he bounced back with two wins.

Peseiro had a rollercoaster run with Nigeria until the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations last year, when he guided the Super Eagles to a second-place finish.

Recall that Peseiro’s contract was supposed to expire a few months before the last Nations Cup, but the Nigeria Football Federation handed him a short extension to see his deal expire at the end of the competition.

This was as the jury was out on him, and they did not want to pay extra if they eventually sacked him after the AFCON. Eventually, that decision backfired, as Peseiro refused to sign a new deal.

The former Venezuela gaffer has been without a job since then, but he now has a new job as Zamalek have announced him as their new coach.

The Zamalek job is big for him, as they want to challenge Al Ahly’s dominance in Egyptian football and do well on the continent.

The last time they won the league was in 2022, but they will be looking to fight for silverware again. The former coach Christian Gross was dismissed due to their inability to compete with Pyramids and Al Ahly for the Egyptian title.

Peseiro already has experience with Egyptian football, having had a brief stint with Al Ahly. He will look to achieve big things with his new bosses at Zamalek.
