Ex-Nasarawa United star Abubakar Lawal dies in Uganda – Everything you need to know

The Nigerian football community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of former Wikki Tourist forward Abubakar Lawal, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 29-year-old who donned the colours of Uganda’s Vipers SC since his move from AS Kigali reportedly fell from the third floor of a shopping mall in Uganda.

The incident, which occurred on February 24, 2025, has raised an eyebrow with the Nigerian government, demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

What Happened to Abubakar Lawal?

According to a statement from the Kajjansi Police Division, Lawal arrived at Voicemall Shopping Arcade in his vehicle, registered UBQ 695G, to visit his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national who had moved into room 416 on February 20, 2025.

Naima claims that Lawal remained in the room preparing tea while she stepped out to a game center within the mall at around 8:00 AM.

Shortly after, he reportedly fell from the balcony. He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police recovered several items belonging to Lawal at the scene, including two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers.

Investigation Underway on Lawal’s Death

The Ugandan police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death, with authorities currently reviewing CCTV footage and interrogating witnesses to establish what transpired before the fall.

The Nigerian government, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has also demanded a full autopsy and a transparent inquiry.

In a statement, NiDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa described the incident as pathetic and suspicious vowing that Nigeria would push for a thorough probe.

“This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover-up at all. This is so sad!

“The Nigerian government will ensure and demand a thorough and transparent investigation. May his soul rest in peace, and God give the family the fortitude to bear this loss,” she said.

Lawal, who was also a final-year student at Cavendish University, was regarded as a promising talent in Ugandan football. His sudden death has left many unanswered questions, and many Nigerian football faithfuls calling for justice.

Authorities have assured the public that no stone will be left unturned in the investigation, as forensic experts and law enforcement officers work to determine the exact cause of his fall.

Meanwhile, Lawal’s family, friends, and teammates continue to await further details as the investigation unfolds.
