Jose Peseiro: Ex-Super Eagles coach takes charge of Emmanuel Amuneke’s former club

Former head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Jose Peseiro, has been reportedly appointed the new manager of Egyptian club Zamalek, Soccernet.ng reports.

Multiple reports have affirmed that the Portuguese tactician will succeed Christian Gross, who recently left the club.

The club’s officials have finalised an agreement with the former Sporting CP manager, who is set to arrive in Cairo to sign his contract and hold a meeting with club executives.

Peseiro’s appointment marks his return to Egyptian football, having previously managed Al Ahly during the 2015/16 season.

His vast coaching experience includes stints with Porto, and Venezuela, along with his most recent role as Nigeria’s national team head coach.

He led the Super Eagles to a second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expired in February 2024.

Emmanuel Amunike

It would be recalled that Emmanuel Amuneke also played for the club between 1991 and 1994, where he scored 26 goals in 71 appearances and won several titles, including the Egyptian Premier League, the African Cup of Champions clubs, and the CAF Super Cup.

Peseiro’s arrival comes at a crucial time for Zamalek, as the team looks to regain its dominance in domestic and continental competitions.

While there has been no official statement from the club or Peseiro, a return to football action is something football faithfuls have been eagerly anticipating after a year.
