Ademola Lookman: Atalanta forward’s injury return delights Eric Chelle – report

New Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is reportedly delighted over the return of Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian international picked up a knock during Atalanta’s clash against Napoli in January and aggravated it during training ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash against Barcelona.

Having missed games against Barcelona, Torino, Bologna, and Verona, the Nigerian attacker has returned to light training. However, his exact return date is yet to be confirmed.

According to Guardian Nigeria, Lookman’s return to training has pleased Chelle, who is set to lead the Super Eagles for the first time against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.

How key is Lookman for the Super Eagles?

The Super Eagles attacker has scored eight goals and provided four assists in 27 appearances for Nigeria. He proved his importance to the team during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where his three goals and one assist were crucial in helping Nigeria reach the final.

His stellar performances in 2024 earned him a spot in the Ballon d’Or rankings and the 2024 African Player of the Year award.

With such credentials, Lookman remains a key figure Chelle would want in his squad at all costs.

When will Lookman return to action?

Atalanta’s boss was recently asked about Lookman’s availability for their Champions League playoff against Club Brugge. However, the Italian tactician admitted uncertainty over the forward’s return.

“Lookman had a rather annoying bruise that he’s been carrying since the Napoli game. We’ll see in the next few days if he’ll be available for Wednesday,” Gasperini said, as quoted by Tutto Atalanta.

With the Super Eagles set to open camp in March, Lookman’s presence would be a major boost for the team and a source of reassurance for Nigerian fans.
