Watch: Paul Onuachu scores first Southampton goal after 658 days, but Saints sink deeper

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has finally opened his scoring account for Southampton, marking his first English Premier League goal, Soccernet.ng reports.

The towering Nigerian forward, who joined the Saints during the 2022-23 January transfer window, had been under mounting pressure to make an impact for the St. Mary’s outfit.

Onuachu found the back of the net in the final minutes of the game against Nottingham Forest, but it was not enough to secure a victory for Ivan Jurić’s side.

In the 92nd minute, Mateus Fernandes sent in a cross, which Onuachu rose to meet with a powerful header, pulling one back for Southampton. However, his goal was not enough to change the outcome.

This marked Onuachu’s first goal in 658 days, as he made his Premier League debut for Southampton in February 2023 against Brentford.

His lack of goals had previously led to a season-long loan at Trabzonspor, where he proved his critics wrong by scoring 17 goals and providing four assists for the Black Sea Storm.

Despite his achievement, Southampton’s struggles continued, as they were defeated once again. The loss leaves them sinking deeper into the relegation zone with just six points from 22 matches, putting increasing pressure on manager Jurić and the squad.

Onuachu’s goal was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult match, but it wasn’t enough to earn any points for the Saints, who remain in a difficult position as they battle to avoid relegation.
