“There is another question mark” – Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso on Boniface’s injury return date

Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso, has raised uncertainty over the return of Super Eagles forward, Victor Boniface, from injury, Soccernet.ng reports.

The former Union SG forward sustained a thigh injury while on international duty with the Super Eagles of Nigeria and has since been sidelined from the squad.

Although initially expected to return to action in early January, his rehabilitation is far from complete, which makes him doubtful for Leverkusen’s clash against Mainz.

For Alonso, the Nigerian attacker could be back next week, but his return remains uncertain as he needs personal training to regain fitness before joining the rest of the team.

“Maybe next week,” he said, “but only maybe. There’s still a question mark. He’s on a good path to feeling better. After that, he’ll need training time.”

The Nigeria international’s absence has not derailed Die Werkself’s impressive campaign. Despite missing their top scorer from last season, who netted 14 league goals to propel the Leverkuseners to their historic first Bundesliga title, the team has thrived.

Boniface, who had already scored eight goals in 15 appearances across all competitions this season before his setback, remains an integral part of Xabi Alonso’s plans, though.

However, the team has proven its resilience, having maintained a perfect record in the last six league games played.

Much of Leverkusen’s continued dominance can be attributed to Patrik Schick, whose form has effectively filled the void left by Boniface.

This presents a major dilemma for Alonso when Boniface returns from injury. Either he sticks with the red-hot Czech forward or revert to his usual reliance on Boniface, who has been outstanding for him in the past.
