Cyriel Dessers: Serie A strugglers reignite interest in Super Eagles striker

Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has emerged as a transfer target for Italian Serie A relegation fighters Cagliari, Soccernet.ng reports.

Dessers’ future has been hanging in the balance in recent weeks due to his lack of game time at Rangers. The 30-year-old striker was the first-choice striker at Rangers until last November, when he lost his place to Hamza Igamane.

This was due to pressure from Rangers fans on coach Philippe Clement to bench Dessers, as they felt he was not prolific enough. Hence, since November 2024, he has started just one game for the Gers.

Due to his current situation, there have been speculations of a potential exit for the former Genk man. French Ligue 1 club Saint Etienne have been heavily linked with Dessers, but they now have company.

According to Rudy Galetti, the Super Eagles star has emerged as a serious target for Serie A club Cagliari. It is not the first time that Dessers will be linked with Cagliari, though. Last summer, he was heavily linked with the Italian club, but the deal fell through.

As it stands, Rangers would be willing to let Dessers leave for a good price, with Igamane in fine form recently, contributing ten goals and two assists in his last eleven games. With the Moroccan star banging in the goals aplenty, Dessers is now dispensable.

Meanwhile, Cagliari are battling to stay alive in Serie A, as they currently sit 17th, separated from the relegation zone by goal difference.

The last time Dessers was in the Serie A, he was relegated with Cremonese. However, this time, Dessers will be hoping to prove his worth and help Cagliari avoid relegation.
